Endeavour

シドニーのオペラハウスを見学しに行った。
I went to watch the Opera House last August.

オペラハウスの近くにはお土産屋やレストラン、バーがある。
Some souvenir shops, restaurants and bar are located near the Opera House.

沈む夕陽が綺麗だったので、バーで一杯ビールを飲むことにした。
I drunk a pint of beer at the bar because sunset was so beautiful.

いくつかの銘柄からEndeavourというのを選び、注文した。
I chosed "Endeavour" from some brands.

こういう時、僕は今まで飲んだことのない銘柄を注文する。
I always try that I have not drunk yet, when I drink something.

しかし、僕の発音するEndeavourをなかなか店員が聞き取ってくれない。
However, I could hardly order because of my pronunciation of Endeavour.

最終的にサーバーに貼ってあるステッカーを指差し、これや！って言う(ToT)
At last, I pointed its sticker sealed on server, and said "This one".

すると、店員は嫌味っぽく、Endeavourと復唱した。
And then, the staff repeated my order.

何が違ったか？
What's the difference?

アクセントの場所だ。
It was the place of accent.

僕は第一音節のeにアクセントを置いたが、店員は第二音節のdeにアクセントを置いていた。
I pronunced strongly at first syllable, but she did it at second syllable.

それだけで伝わらないものだ。
It sounds a quite small difference.

オーストラリア人自体、抑揚のない早口な英語で話すので、聞き取るのはなかなか大変だ。
Aussie usually speak quickly in monotonous way. That's why I can hardly catch their English.

しかし、外国人観光客がたくさん押し寄せる場所の店員なら、聞き方を変えるとか、もう少し歩み寄って欲しいものだ。
However, I wish they would take care for tourists, especially where many tourists would come.

東京オリンピック、外国人観光客をどう「おもてなし」するつもりなんだろうか？
I wonder how we would provide services to foreigners at the  Tokyo Olympic...
